Moving from Darkness to Light after Loss is a compilation of favorite, informative and inspirational articles about grief. The author, Patricia Johnston, is a registered nurse, cultural anthropologist, and grief coach who has witnessed or studied grief in every country of the world. Patricia was widowed in 2007 when her husband of 34 years died from a glioblastoma brain tumor.

The articles, based on the author's personal experience of moving from darkness to light after loss, discuss the subject of when and how to clean out your deceased loved one's closet; why we still emulate Jackie Kennedy's stoicism as a model for mourning; why we in the Western world feel awkward around friends who have suffered a loss; how beliefs that intuitive communication occurs with deceased loved ones are quite common around the world (e.g., clairvoyance or clairaudience); what makes miscarriage a type of disenfranchised grief; and the nation-wide Relay for Life event as an important healing and bonding community grief ritual.

Patricia has accomplished what every author hopes to do—stimulate discussion. The grieving process has been ignored and silenced far too long. As a product of Western culture, we have been taught to fear death and keep our discussion of it in the closet or behind closed doors.

The overall messages of Patricia’s book demand five stars—celebrate a loved one’s passing and celebrate the life one has lived. Patricia has opened up the dialogue for her readers to seize the opportunity to change their understanding of the grieving process. Patricia does leave me wanting more also. I want to know that it is okay to grieve, to miss my loved ones and to be able to talk about it openly. Patricia has taught me to grieve through celebration rather than depression. Our loved ones live on, this I know having written two books with messages from the other side. Patricia supports a grieving process that reconnects us to our loved ones if we just listen.

Moving from Darkness to Light after Loss edition by Patricia Johnston Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

This brief book discusses the taboo against public expressions of grief in America and offers alternative views. These are some of the topics the book covers
-Unhealthy grief that is never adequately expressed
-Why people avoid grieving friends and how to be a good friend to a grieving person
-The importance of grief rituals to express grief positively
-Accepting and expressing our grief and moving forward positively in life
-Talking to our lost loved ones and other intuitive experiences
I wouldn't say this is a definitive treatise on grief. It's much too brief for that, but it does for us something that few books do. It gives us permission to grieve and to be open to whatever experience grief brings, no matter how unusual. The taboo against public expressions of grief leaves many of us feeling trapped in our grief, and this booklet opens the window to let in light and acceptance of our own unique grief experience. I admit that this brief book left me wanting more (which is why I gave it 4 stars, not 5), but it also really opened my eyes to see grief in a different way. I'm hopeful that the author will write another more in-depth book on this subject about which she is clearly very knowledgeable.
It's worth the $1.99 but not much more. I was expecting more comprehensive material, more diverse views or cultures, more quality - as it's by an educated anthropologist. It's a beginning, read in minutes not hours. I would pay more for a more comprehensive approach and details.
I will agree that our Western culture struggles with managing death, especially after the attention of the media and funeral ceremonies are done but it offers only basics, that most uneducated already know, to improve it.
This collection of informative and thought provoking blogs really opens the door to honest exchanges about something our "civilized" culture is so afraid to acknowledge or embrace. Patricia's thoughts on different expressions of grief, and the importance of grieving in a way that is natural for each individual as opposed to "acceptable" to others, are well researched and informative. I was happy to see her inclusion of alternative means of grief expression and release - meditation, use of intuition, and using that intuition to communicate with loved ones that have moved on. Her blogs/articles ring with understanding and acceptance as she shares her own personal stories of loss. I highly recommend this collection to anyone.

ps - I also wish she would take this small collection and use it as a base to write a book on this subject.
